About Us

Diversity, London’s LGBT chamber choir, was formed in 1992 by lesbians and gay men who wanted to sing some of the most beautiful classical music written for choirs along with the best of other musical genres.

Diversity in the pews

Many gay choirs at the time shied away from performing sacred or religious music on the grounds that the church was not inclusive to gay and lesbians. Notwithstanding this the founding members felt that such a large part of a choir’s repertoire would be missing if this stance was taken and so decided to form a chamber choir that would sing the music they loved.

The past years have included highly successful performances of Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Britten’s Ceremony of Carols as well as madrigals, part-songs and songs from the shows. We perform regular concerts at home and abroad, most recently with The Classical Lesbians in Berlin and with the London Gay Symphony Orchestra at St. Martin’s in the Field, London and at Various Voices at the South Bank, London.

Clapping

We also entertain at charity events and civil partnership ceremonies, always reflecting our commitment to diversity in song choice and performance style, celebrating the wide experience of the LGBT choral community across the globe.

Concerts

We usually perform 2 concerts a year - Christmas and Summer. Our concerts are usually performed in churches such as St Botolph Aldgate, St Pauls Covent Garden, and Grosvenor Chapel Mayfair. We also sing at other events - these include CP’s, visiting other Choirs either in the UK or Europe, fun workshop weekends away and local community events.

Membership

Diversity’s membership is mix of 40 women and men from all backgrounds, professions and ages. It is not all about the music however. Regular weekly rehearsals and social events help to build a friendly, inclusive and fun group where friendships are made and sustained.
